Matt has a BA from Colorado College and an MS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Washington (USA), and a diverse professional background including work as a software engineer, environmental activist, carpenter, English teacher, wilderness guide, and interpreter. During grad school, Matt studied how computer systems can be designed to support the needs of large organizations. Matt left a successful career as a computer user interface designer in Seattle to start Mycelio in 2005, after a decade-long interest in ecologically sustainable living. His interests also include permaculture and natural building, and he has trained and worked with the Wilder Institute and House Alive.

Alexis Figeroa

Currently completing his Licenciatura in Marine Science at the Universidad del Mar here in Puerto Angel, Alexis conducts research on the lagoons and estuaries on the Oaxaca coast. His diverse interests include the interaction between fresh and salt water ecosystems in this region, impacts of local economic growth on marine life and diversity, and environmental education in local communities. Alexis has been following environmental and ecological issues in this region for 10 years and brings a wealth of local knowledge and experience to the team. Alexis is also a natural builder who has built his own solar powered house using a combination of traditional and alternative techniques, including cob, adobe, palm thatch roofing, composting toilets.
